The most famous incense (and also the most precious) is the so-called frankincense. It comes from the resin of the Boswellia Sacra (or Boswelia Serrata), a tree typical of Somalia and the Arabian Peninsula (in particular Oman and Yemen). During the winter the bark is engraved, allowing the resin to escape; once dried, it releases a balsamic scent with delicate citrus notes. In addition to frankincense, there are other highly prized varieties: the Protium Copal of Central America, with a more bitter scent, which was used by pre-Columbian civilizations in religious rites, and the Elemi (Canarium Lozonicum) of the Philippines, which gives a citrus and invigorating aroma. In perfumery, incense is often combined with other resins, such as myrrh, which amplifies its purifying and mystical dimension. This union gives the fragrances an intense and profound character, capable of transmitting inner peace and emotion.
