Tuberose Perfume

Seemingly white and pure, the agave amica, better known as tuberose, releases a completely unexpected scent. The fragrance of this famous tubular flower is surprisingly sharp, with green undertones reminiscent of spices. Who would have guessed? Most likely, the Aztecs knew about it centuries ago, as they seem to have domesticated it in ancient times. Today, it is widely cultivated in various tropical and temperate countries for its ornamental function and - above all - for its stunning scent, which is extensively used in perfumery. Tuberose perfumes have been part of our "olfactory culture" for centuries: tuberose arrived in Europe in the 17th century and was immediately distilled to extract its essential oil. Its floral scent with bold and sparkling tones captivated the aristocracy, particularly in Women's Fragrances, where tuberose introduced a new feminine scent, more complex and multifaceted. Even today, tuberose perfumes are often considered feminine; however, especially among niche perfumes, intriguing exceptions have emerged: unisex or men's perfumes that use tuberose to offer unique and innovative masculine scents.

Marie Antoinette's Tuberose Perfume: Le Sillage de la Reine

Among the many women who have fallen in love with the scent of tuberose over the years, one stands out for making it her olfactory signature: Marie Antoinette. During the time of Louis XVI, an ambitious young perfumer named Jean Louis Fargeon gained the favor of the queen consort through his refined olfactory creations. Marie Antoinette entrusted him with the important task of bottling the scent of a place dear to her: the Petit Trianon (a specific part of the park at the Palace of Versailles). To create the fragrance, Fargeon crafted a skillful blend of orange blossom, sandalwood, jasmine, iris, cedar, and - of course - tuberose: a bright floral bouquet with some powdery touches and others more sparkling. The perfume was named after its inspiration, Parfum de Trianon, but it went down in history as "Le Sillage de la Reine", meaning "the Queen's trail" in French.
